What is Mahjong?

Mahjong is a popular tile-based game that originally comes from China and was developed during the Qing Dynasty. The game is typically played with 4 players and this is why many choose to play Mahjong online as otherwise, they wouldn’t have enough people. The game has now spread around the world and is now a popular form of online entertainment. This is a game of skill and strategy with an element of chance also thrown in for good measure.

Playing Mahjong gives you the opportunity to really learn the game and develop a passion for it just like we have. Whilst the original sets can be quite large, if you play Mahjong online you have the added convenience of being able to play almost anywhere. We offer free Mahjong and a wide range of Mahjong game styles including traditional mahjong, Baida mahjong and Riichi mahjong Tournament Mahjong. If you look on our site, you will discover that you can also learn Mahjong.

Why is Mahjong So Popular?

Originally, when Mahjong was first invented it was intended for the Chinese elite and not for the lower class. The reason for this is because there was a genuine fear that it might help the lower classes to develop their mental capacity and thus provide a threat to the Chinese ruling classes. It is felt that the game is so popular in China because of the symbolism in different elements of the game.

Of course, today the game has grown in popularity globally largely due to it requiring more skill than many other games. The fact that it can now be played online means that it is now more accessible to a greater number of people with fewer people needing to be present in the same room at the same time.
